Art Element - Rural Alaska Life
This painting was published by Ryder Erickson, He is a self-taught artist, born and raised in Alaska. When he was a young boy, he didn't have any experience with any help in making art. So he turned to his family, mainly his uncle who was an Inupiat artist, In the beginning he was interested in drawing and painting when he was in this younger days at school and when he was growing up. This also effected, when he read a book about classic folk tales on Alaska.
In the beginning creating this beautiful painting, he was thinking about the terms of a rural description into a painting form. As he was growing up in the village, it was a positive background to show the lifestyle of "Growing Up In the Village". I was reading through with the Article about this way of showing what it is like to gather some food through the Tundra or the wilderness. As I have experienced the same situation through with living through the village all my life, since it deeply describes a strong value towards fishing and hunting.
Into researching through the internet of showing his respect of providing a sense of being together as a community with the seasons going through all year around. As his love and respect with his culture and believes, when he expresses this paintings. His tone of painting would be to express neon colors with the sense of darker items to show the meaning of the painting. As you see the painting, there is some kind of sunrise or sunset, with the fish-camps in the background with fish drying.
I looked at more of Ryder Erickson’s work: they are so vibrant and just enchanting. I agree that he captures his way of life beautifully. I especially love how he paints water using a variety of colors, like oranges and pinks, and how he paints clouds to look soft and almost dreamlike. He uses tone to create contrast which emphasizes his love for both nature and his culture. My favorite is the last one, Checking the Net for Kings with Papa because of the pastel colors.
ReplyDeleteI appreciate your artwork selection for this assignment. It’s been interesting reading everyone’s blogs because it gives insight into the person. Such as your blog is about a local artist who paints views of your coastal village. I like the way the artist was able to use color for the sky. It left the person looking at the painting question whether it is a sunrise or sunset. I really appreciate pictures that bring back strong memories or remind me of a place. One of my favorite pieces that we have in our home is a Fred Machentanz print of a traditional whaler on the edge of the ice pack next to his whaling boat. It reminds me of the many years that we lived in Barrow, Alaska. While we have an Ernie Robertson painting of man in a flat-bottomed river boat on an Alaskan river which reminds my husband of growing up in Interior Alaska. The artist in your selection is a master in using color to create depth.
